Shadows

Book 0.5 in the Lux series
My Review of Book I : Obsidian
Genre: YA SciFi – Aliens
Published February 21st 2012 by Entangled Publishing
synopsis from goodreads

The last thing Dawson Black expected was Bethany Williams. As a Luxen, an alien life form on Earth, human girls are…well, fun. But since the Luxen have to keep their true identities a secret, falling for one would be insane. Dangerous. Tempting. Undeniable.

Bethany can’t deny the immediate connection between her and Dawson. And even though boys aren’t a complication she wants, she can’t stay away from him. Still, whenever they lock eyes, she’s drawn in. Captivated. Lured. Loved.

Dawson is keeping a secret that will change her existence…and put her life in jeopardy. But even he can’t stop risking everything for one human girl. Or from a fate that is as unavoidable as love itself

I’m finishing this week of awesomeness today with another Review of one of Jennifer L. Armentrouts books! Last week the prequel to her Lux series – Shadow’s came out! And of course I needed to get it instantly! I reviewed the first book in the series Obisidan in the middle of last week – and if you haven’t read my review I loved it insanely!

One warning before you read on. Although Shadows is a prequel to Obisidan I strongly recommend reading if after you read Obisidan. There is a lot going on that makes much more sense when you are already familiar with the world. Also, while reading Obsidian the journey of discovering all the tiny bits of pieces of the world is much more interesting than jumping right in. So do yourself a favor and first read Obisidan – I promise you when you finished you will need to read Shadows as soon as possible!

So, if you stop reading here, let me tell that I loved Shadows because I simply love Jennifer L. Armentrouts work and I love this phenomenal Lux series! Pick it up – Seriously! Pick them up!

A Must Read for Fans of the Series

For all the others that have already read Obsidian, this is a must read for you as it was for me! When we get to know Daemon in Obsidian we know that all of the Lux Aliens are born in Triplets and Dee and Daemon had a brother Dawson that looked exactly like Daemon but has a total different character.

I loved Dawson! He’s sweet, loving and open-minded – much different from his jerk brother Daemon he also has no problems with humans. But, don’t underestimate Dawson he can be as bad ass as Daemon when those are threatened he loves.

Wonderful deep and heartbreaking family bonds

I loved his love and relationship with his family – but his relationship with Dee was the sweetest – truly! What those boys would do for their family is beautiful and one big allure of this whole story. Big bad ass but with a very big heart underneath all this muscles and bad attitude!

Tragic but beautiful Love story

This is the story how Dawson falls in love with Bethany and it tells the story that lead finally to their death. But, although I knew the ending I was still eager to read this story simply because I wanted to know those boys more and I wanted to spend time in this world created and set in Obsidian!

Bethany was a cute character, a slightly geeky girl who loves to paint and moved into this town full of Aliens. There was an instant connection, something I don’t necessarily like in stories but here I was fine with it since it was not a full book but rather a novella!

The romance between them was sweet and sometimes heartbreaking beautiful! I loved Dawson’s possessive behavior – something I always love to read with such strong male leads. But to Beth Dawson was the sweetest boy ever and he simply is adorable! His love for her changed him and consumed him *sigh*

Bottom Line

Altogether this is a must read for all those like me who loved Obisidan and can’t wait for Onyx to come out! It tells us also more about the relationship between the triplets and I loved the deep family bounds. It was a heartbreaking beautiful love story with a tragic ending that will still manage to water you eyes and breaks your heart.

Personal Note: But, the ending also left me very suspicious and I have an idea about what will come in Onyx – I won’t say more but we can discuss in the comments if you have the same suspicion about Dawson’s and Beth’s “death” – or … disappearance ?

Much Love and I wish you all a wonderful weekend!

  3. Now I have to pick Obsidian up off my shelf and read it! Thanks for also informing us that this is better left to be read after reading the first book. Sounds weird that a prequel would be read after book one but I guess it works.

Thanks for the great review, glad you are loving Jennifer's books. 🙂

I seriously had this every so often about pre-quels. Maybe it's because they write it once the first book is already out and it's published after the first book? Not sure but I know that I always love to read the first book before reading prequels.
