I was always intrigued by the premise of A Touch Mortal – it hold a fascinating dark mix that I wanted to explore. I was mesmerized by the cover (those who know me know that I LOVE black,white and pink)! However, I never got to read it until I had so much time to read when I was lying on the beach in Thailand end of last year! And I’m so glad I did…
Thrilling and dark premise
A Touch Mortal deals with a very dark and also very delicate issue – suicide and what happens after.. Truthfully, I think it was very brave from Leah Clifford to turn this theme into a paranormal read – and I think she really did a wonderful job – without being disrespectful! The story starts with a very romantic and happy plot before we explore the darker fields of the story, which I think was a good way to start the story. Eden, connects with Gabriel and Az and she falls instantly , fast and hard for Az. Often, I complain about those instant love connection, yet here it works and we find ourselves in a happy mood before the tragic happens and the story turns darker.
Az and Gabriel
Those two boys were the highlight of the story for me! I loved them both for so different reasons. Az is the mysterious dark, alluring boy I happen to always fall in love with in YA stories. Gabriel, is the good guy, the best friend who watches out for both Eden and Az. There is no way not to love Gabriel! Even more, his deep wish to keep them both save forces him to make very difficult decisions which is either very brave, loyal or stupid. Either way I loved this boy so very much!
Eden..
Well, Eden … In the first part of the book I liked her very much but this changed after “the incident that changed everything”. I have to admit though that she’s a very strong character, she dealt with what happened to her and what she discovered with a lot of inner strength. It was incredible seeing her develop. But, with all this strong features came also a certain coldness I never really liked very much. I do understand why Eden had to change and what brought her to this point but it’s hard reading a story when you are not perfectly in tune with the character that narrates the story.
The “Touch” – a paranormal elements hard to grasp
The Touch was the ability or special “gift” (if you can call it like this) Eden gained. It was very unique but I had problems getting to the basics of how this works in the beginning. I felt lost a few times since I never understood the purpose and the basic rules. Like for instance, with Vampires or other creatures it is often more easy – yet I had a hard time getting “The Touch” .
Bottom Line
In the end, it was an alluring and thrilling story with Angels, awesome boys, a strong girl and a lot of darkness! I did enjoy the ride and I loved the boys very very much! It’s interesting how the story was build, with a happy love right at the beginning and darkness that follows. Even though I had some issues especially with Eden, I’m still excited to pick up the next one which just came out this week.
Additional Notes: “A Touch Morbid is the sequel and just came out on Tuesday. I read some Reviews which were raving about A Touch Morbid! Specially my Bloggy Friend Erica wrote a wonderful review and hosted a Blog Tour stop that made me want to continue with the story very badly! Oh and what also totally sold me where the Book Trailers, which I’m going to share with you now – you need to see those, it gave me the chills but made me instantly wish to read the book …now!

I wasn't so much tempted myself at first but then I read some awesome reviews and I was intrigued by the darkness. Not many YA books really explore some dark topics! I'm glad I picked it up 🙂

I keep seeing this series around and I've been curious about it. I had no idea it was about suicide and what happens afterwards. That's definitely a unique and daring premise! I definitely know what you mean about the coldness factor. While I love a strong heroine, sometimes strength can make someone feel cold if taken to a certain degree.
I'm still not sure about this one! I'll have to think about it though. 🙂 Nice review Danny!

That was really my biggest complain that she changed so much and turned so cold in my eyes. I like strong heroines and I get that it might be hard to get the perfect balance between strength and emotions, but here I really felt it was lacking. but, I do have such high hopes for the sequel. I read somewhere that she changes quite a bit and I'm looking forward seeing this happen!
