Welcome to the Wrinkle in Time Blog Tour!
This week will be focused on the characters and today we start with Happy Medium. Ever since I’ve been asked to be on this tour I was intriguied by this book. I haven’t read it and never heard of it before, but guys I’m from Germany and we read different books when we are kids. Nevertheless I was fascinated by a book that even after 50 years is able to generate such a hype. So, when I’ve been asked about which character I’d love to write I chose the Happy Medium. Why? Because everyone needs happiness and I thought I start the year happy. So I was eager to find out more about Happy Medium.
She’s a woman with a crystal ball.. Well yes that tells us much right? So, this is what Wiki tells us about Happy Medium:
The Happy Medium lives in a cavern on a planet in Orion’s Belt. Human in appearance, she is described as wearing a satin gown and a silk turban, and uses a crystal ball to look at distant places and people. Her title comes from the character’s jolly temperament, and her preference for looking at happy things. She helps Meg, Calvin, and Charles Wallace see The Black Thing through the crystal ball and understand what they are fighting against. She is introduced in chapter five. (The name “Happy Medium” is a pun alluding to the common expression for reaching an acceptable compromise: “to find a happy medium.”) – Source: Wiki
So she’s a woman who loves to see the happy things in life instead of focusing on the unpleasant ones… However, I found a very nice article on shmoop.com:
And she is indeed happy, though it seems she gets to be that way through pretending unhappy things don’t exist: as she says to Mrs. Whatsit, “Oh, why must you make me look at unpleasant things when there are so many delightful ones to see?” (5.84). Oh it’s good to see the happy things and it’s important to sometimes focus on them instead of letting the bad things and overload you. However, if this turns into ignorance … But, who doesn’t love a cheery optimistic person?
Now please, to all of you who already read Wrinkle of Time, what can you tell me about Happy Medium, what do you remember??? And to those like me who haven’t read it yet, are you intrigued like me, now? It seems like this is a fantastic piece of literature and I followed the Blog Tour and read some amazing posts. A Wrinkle In Time sounds like a must read for me and a book I would read to my kids (if I’d have any…)

About Madeleine L’Engle
Madeleine L’Englewas an American writer best known for her Young Adult fiction, particularly the Newbery Medal-winning A Wrinkle in Time and its sequels A Wind in the Door, A Swiftly Tilting Planet, and Many Waters. Her works reflect her strong interest in modern science: tesseracts, for example, are featured prominently in A Wrinkle in Time, mitochondrial DNA in A Wind in the Door, organ regeneration in The Arm of the Starfish, and so forth.

A tesseract (in case the reader doesn’t know) is a wrinkle in time. To tell more would rob the reader of the enjoyment of Miss L’Engle’s unusal book.

I'm very interested in the new edition of Wrinkle in Time. I read it way, way back when I was little and I don't remember most details. I think that's a good reason for me to order this from Amazon… Do you have a copy of it? Are the extras worth it??

Yes! I'm intrigued as well. o: I haven't heard of it either, but maybe that has to do with me being Swedish as well. I definitely need to check it outttt!

I read WiT decades ago! That’s so sad to just even say. But reading your post made me remember just how much I loved this book, even if I have next to no memory of Happy Medium! LOL! Thanks so much for the trip down memory lane and the new edition with all the extras sounds so nice!!!
