cutie thoughts: Back in the day before reading this novel (you know that long ago time known as April of 2011), I had looked at the reviews and seen that there was definitely a dividing line: Those who loved it and those who were underwhelmed by it or flat out hated the novel. So I wasn’t sure what to expect.
Danny thoughts: I went into this story totally unbalanced. Normally I always check out earlier reviews, but as soon as I saw Hereafter I knew I had to read it. Seriously, the cover is just awesome!! You get right away what to expect, a hunting ghost story!
cutie thoughts: When reading a book I try to keep an open mind, with no expectations save one: I expect the author to make their fiction believable. Truth be told, I don’t care if it’s realistic or cliche. I just want to be sold on the bill of goods the author is trying to pass off as “their reality.” And I have to say, Ms. Hudson did do that for me with Hereafter. I believed that Amelia was a ghost who had lost all her memories and had no idea what was going on. I believed that she felt an instant, magical connection with Joshua. And I believed that Eli was up to no good and workin’ for a greater evil. All these things I believed and then some. In my book, that makes for a good story. The best story? No. But a good story that sucked me in? Yep.
Danny thoughts: Cutie my friend you are right per usual… The world Mrs Hudson created in Hereafter is different and very unique! I love when an author creates a world that is so unique and so full of special imagination…. The world building in Hereafter was fantastic! It was however very dark, which I like. No happy Ghost live, nope. On the contrary! I have to admit though, that I didn’t get the whole concept and I was slightly confused once in a while. But, this just makes me want to read the next one too..
cutie thoughts: I loved the setting. Oklahoma has always been somewhere I’ve long to visit. I connected with Amelia’s heartache and her need to wake up and live. I adored the sweetness and strength of Joshua, who accepted Amelia for who she was and believed in her, but had a bit of an edge to him .
Danny thoughts: Isn’t that kid cute? I loved him instantly!! He’s sweet without lacking strength and determination!
cutie thoughts: And I liked the supernatural element in this novel. I felt it was a fresh take on an old standard. I enjoyed Ms. Hudson’s writing. I really enjoyed the dialogue between her characters. And I like the set up for the sequel to come, while this novel answered a few important questions (who Amelia is and a little about the mechanics of ghost) there are still many questions left to be answered. And I am interested in getting those answers.
Danny thoughts: Oh yes!!! More, please! As I said earlier I think the world and concept of the ghosts and the afterlife confused me a little, but I think it’s a good set up for the sequal, which I’m most definitely going to read!
We both enjoyed this novel and give it a solid 3 with a 1/2 for giving the tingles when Amelia and Joshua kissed. The to the end. We definitely want more!

Cutie and Danny-
Great honest review! I have this one and can't wait to get into it. I'm reading something else right now but plan to start it this week. I'm with you Danny, I can't pass up a book with a cover like that. I'll let you know what I think in a few weeks! But I always go in with an open mind. I'm not expecting great literature. I just want to be entertained.
