Hiya folks! I’ve been extremely lax in posting due to all sorts of real life ups and down. But ya know what? I’m still reading! So here is a quick and dirty post to catch you up on what I’ve been knocking back:
Greta and I scored a pretty cool ARC of Ordinary Beauty by Laura Wiess. We’ll have a chance to review this book next month and give away some sweet swag by the author!
I also read The DUFF by Kody Keplinger which was reviewed by Danny a few months ago. Holy shiz you guys! READ IT! I was sad when I had to return this book to the library (stinking holds!) I actually wanted to read it again. And that’s saying something as I’m a one and done sort of girl.
The Rose and the Beast: Fairy Tales Retold by Francesa Lia Block was a great quick read. They were little vignets of the fairy tales we know and love, but flipped around and changed. And to be quite honest, much prettier, angstier, prosey-er and well….a lot cooler than I’ve ever seen. A definite GO READ!
I was inspired go back and read more of the authors work because I enjoyed The Frenzy so much. This book had mixed reviews. But for a sorta cheezy Were-girl story, I liked it! It was another quick read and kept me guessing one what was going to happen until the end.
This brings me to this post, where I was excited to read Red Riding Hood. Oh boy. Just. Um. Yeah. No. I could barely finish it. Can I just leave it at that? Can someone tell me if the movie is better? Cuz I’ll just leave my netflix que alone if it isn’t.
Ok – enough of the crappy books – instead, how about Across the Universe by Beth Revis. Another Bookworm review by Heather, it completely and totally lived up to my expectations! Wow! This was one I had a really hard time putting down. And I’m pretty sure was one of my 2am-why-the-eff-am-I-still-awake-reading sort of books. But I’ll say it again: Totally Worth It!
White Cat by Holly Black was a book we got from a publisher that Pushy asked if I could take a stab at. Even tho I liked the idea of a bunch of people who can curse, or change your luck just by touching you with their hands, I think I was a bit too old for it to really ring my bell. However, I think a middle school kid would really get a kick out of it. Especially a boy who enjoys a bit of fantasy and crime stories.
Another book that was a bit outside of my normal genre was Out of the Shadows by Joanne Rendell. This was something I think my Mother-in-law would enjoy. It’s based on a woman, Clara, who finds out she is related to Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein. Through this history and a few interesting glimpses into scenes of the classic author’s life, Clara is able to figure out what’s going right and wrong on her somewhat doomed relationship and her life. There is some mystery going on based on her fiance’s work into genetic modification and also on who this hunky guy who worked with a good friend of hers. It was an okay read – but a bit too fluffy for me. But like I said, my mother-in-law would dig it.
Since I’m a huge Karen Moning fan, I’ve been saving her Highlander series when I had a little time for good old-fashioned smut. And whoa-boy this book was something I thought I’d find in my mom’s side table drawer! Beyond the Highland Mist was fun though. I didn’t expect much, except some hot dudes in kilts (I wasn’t disappointed!) and was happy to see a strong female lead and even some cool fairie stuff. I’m interested to see what the next few books bring to the table (more glistening male pecs please!)
So up to bat:
I need to finish Ordinary Beauty. And I also have some more Highlander books for some eye-candy. I picked up The Hunger Games to read again (I had gotten it at the library and I think I need to own them all! Booyah!) and something that had a good cover and interesting premise: The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson

HAHAS! Just cuz I'm mean I requested "REd Riding Hood" just to make fun of it. Thppt! I don't have it yet but I'll let you know when I get it.
And yes!! Welsome to the nommy land of highlanders!! Aren't they fab? I still have a couple to read from that series but they are oh so delicious!!

Wow, "The Rose & The Beast" looks amazing, so I'm going to go ahead and add that to my TBR list right now. I also think "The Sky is Everywhere" seems mighty interesting…so I'm going to look into that as well. Thank you SO much for sharing these books with us…this is an AWESOME list! 😀
