Stray
Book I in the Shifters series
by Rachel Vincent (website)
Published June 1st 2007 by Harlequin
amazon (Paperback, Kindle and audiobook)
synopsis from goodreads

There are only eight breeding female werecats left . . .
And I’m one of them.
I look like an all-American grad student. But I am a werecat, a shape-shifter, and I live in two worlds.

Despite reservations from my family and my Pride, I escaped the pressure to continue my species and carved out a normal life for myself. Until the night a Stray attacked.

I’d been warned about Strays — werecats without a Pride, constantly on the lookout for someone like me: attractive, female, and fertile. I fought him off, but then learned two of my fellow tabbies had disappeared.

This brush with danger was all my Pride needed to summon me back . . . for my own protection. Yeah, right. But I’m no meek kitty. I’ll take on whatever — and whoever — I have to in order to find my friends. Watch out, Strays — ’cause I got claws, and I’m not afraid to use them . . .

I got this book as a R.A.K (Random Act of Kindess) from the lovely Vanessa @ the BookSoumates and I was so so happy to finally start reading this series! I tried several times to start RV’s YA series but never really got into it, but when I read the synopsis from this series I was caught.

Werecats….
so much more sexy than Werewolves…

See, I don’t have a big thing for werewolves (unlike my lovely friend Greta..) but WereCats..weell that sounds sexy to me!! If you ask me Dogs or Cats I will always choose the cat!

Well getting to the point, I really enjoyed this start in the series! Marc is really reeealllyyyy sexy and me needs a possessive strong alpha male! Yet here we also deal also with a alpha girl Faythe which makes the story even more interesting.

Faythe comes from an old family of werecats and her father is the big Alpha of their pride. But Faythe always wanted to get away and started college against her parents wish. When Stray’s (werecats that were not born werecats but were rather “bitten”) start to kidnap young female cats, her father orders her home afraid something might happen to her. Well, Faythe is not happy with this situation since she hates being considered defenseless. But here, she has no choice!

Faythe:
strong, stubborn but awesome!

Faythe is an incredible complex person and I loved that. Truly not without flaws she’s sometimes stupid and stuck between being a teen and acting mature. But, she knows that and tried to act more and more like an adult and take responsibilities for her own actions. I liked seing her grow and I’m most excited to see what will happen with her in the next books.

Marc… Oh Marc!

Marc.. Oh my Marc… he’s wonderful!!!! He loves Faythe deeply and tries hard to get her back. They split up after it got to serious for Faythe and she run away to College. But Marc never gave up and would do anything to get her back.

Seeing those two strong cats battle to be together was awesome to follow!

The story itself got really intense during the end and Mrs. Vincent spared you with nothing. You have to be prepared for some absolutely cruel scenes.

Bottom Line:

Absolutely worth reading and a captivating start in a series! But be prepared for mature content!

I listened to the audiobook and I was super glad I did, the narrator has a smooth voice and it
was wonderful listening to her. What often bothers me when listening to audios are the male voices when the narrator is a woman, yet here she did an awesome job and I could easily keep track on who is who according to her voice. Actually she did such an excellent job that I also forgot that that is a woman who’s giving the males her voice. This is how a audiobook is supposed to be! In addition she also managed to lower her voice when Faythe was not speaking her thoughts aloud, this would be something you normally catch when reading the book but is hard to get in an audio. Oh and the hot sex scenes were also delivered perfectly. I can’t wish for me in an audiobook!
All the books in this series are available as audiobooks and I highly recommend them !
Narrator: Jennifer Van Duck
Lenght: 13 hrs 53 min
All the audios in this series are between 11 and 14 hrs and are all
narrated by Jennifer Van Duck
Right now the audio is on Spring Sale at audible…
Check Out the other books in the series:

Right now I’m listening to Pride, but I have the other ones already downloaded.
Alpha is the last book in this series, so
it is safe to start now since you can read them all back to back!
Truly this is a captivating series
and sometimes after reading all those YA novels
an adult series can never hurt!
Wish you all a wonderful weekend my friends.
Cheers!

  1. I love this series! I started reading it last year, and got hooked. I'm so happy you're enjoying it! Alpha was a tiny bit of a letdown for me, but most final books in series' are to be honest. I didn't like Faythe as much in the final book.
Nonetheless, you're going to love the rest of the series! And I may just download the audiobooks, as you've given them such a great recommendation 🙂

Great review!! Werecats you say?? Well I have to admit that I'm with Greta. Give me a yummy wolfy and you make me a happy panda, but I have to say I could see myself swooning over a hot werecat!! LOLz

I'm gonna need to howl at this one. Or should I say meow…lol Who knows maybe I'll drag Greta along for the ride:P

  5. *giggles* I'm glad you agree with me on the cats vs. wolves sexiness!!! Plus, the way Mrs Vincent describes those cats will give you goosebumps !
They feel so real and easy to visualize, it's awesome when an author can do that with words.
I'm excited to hear what you think!!

  6. Oh my, did you just read THE scene? I can't remember what book it was, but book 3 sounds right. So much sobbing. One of the most emotional scenes I've ever experienced in reading. Sooooooo devastating. How did she suck us in and crush us with words? I'm still baffled but the ability of writers to do this. It's an incredible talent.
