Book Description:

The night is not safe for mortals. Denise MacGregor knows all too well what lurks in the shadows – her best friend is half-vampire Cat Crawfield – and she has already lost more than the average human could bear. But her family’s past is wrapped in secrets and shrouded in darkness – and a demon shapeshifter has marked Denise as prey. Now her survival depends on an immortal who lusts for a taste of her.
He is Spade, a powerful, mysterious vampire who has walked the earth for centuries and is now duty-bound to protect this endangered, alluring human – even if it means destroying his own kind. Denise may arouse his deepest hungers, but Spade knows he must fight his urge to have her as they face the nightmare together …
Because once the first crimson drop falls, they will both be lost.

Review:

Denise MacGregor is no stranger to the supernatural world. Her best friend is half-vampire Cat, who is married to a vampire named Bones. It’s been one year since she lost her husband Randy in a large scale attack by supernatural forces meant to destroy Cat over New Years. In the subsequent year she has cut herself off from all things supernatural, existing only in the regular world.
When her family members start to be murdered one by one, Denise discovers that a demon is after her family. She goes to Bones’ best vampire mate Spade for help destroying the demon after not being able to contact Cat or Bones for help. What she doesn’t count on is falling for the mysterious Spade or that he might feel the same way about a mere mortal. Their efforts to beat the demon take them across the world, in an action packed and romantic story that draws you in immediately.

I have read all four books of Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress series featuring Cat and Bones. First Drop of Crimson is the first standalone spin off book from this series. You don’t need to have read the Night Huntress series to enjoy and follow the Night Huntress World books. A second Night Huntress World book featuring the oldest master vampire Mencheres is due out July 27, 2010. I’ve already preordered my copy!

First Drop of Crimson is a highly enjoyable paranormal romance story which draws you in quickly. Author Jeaniene Frost is a master at weaving romance into action packed plots. She is able to seamlessly weave characters from the Night Huntress series into this story while letting secondary characters from that series like Denise and Spade shine at the forefront of this story. I loved seeing Denise and Spade become full fledged main characters and exploring their personalities and past experiences more in depth.

I give this title 4 out of 5 books for a highly enjoyable read with a very satisfying conclusion. Join the discussion of this book on our forum.

OOoOoooo that sounds promising!!! I will definitely put it onto my list and read it! But what do you think, does it makes sense to first read the Night Huntress series? It's on my to-read list since forever, but I never bought them and started. "Halfway to the grave" would be the very first, right? Honestly, what disturbed me most were the covers. I'm a sucker for good covers! Although it shouldn't matter, it does for me. It's like when I buy a new wine I haven't tasted before, I go and look at the label and buy the one which looks best (well apart from the grapes, but I won't go into wine tasting and stuff lol )It's a bad excuse for not having read it but so I am ;)Thanks for this great review!!!

Start with the Night Huntress Series first, there's only 4 books and you won't be able to put them down. If you read those before you read First Drop of Crimson, the secondary characters like Ian will be a little more clear. I strongly recommend that you read these books next! Danny-buy them on kindle, they're all available. Pushy- I'll gladly lend all of the books to you. It would give us an excuse to meet up anyway, let the kids play.

The books aren't really smutty. I would say there is an average amount of smut in them, less than the Night Huntress books. The cover screams smut, doesn't it? LOL
