From the description this sounded exactly like the book I’d love to read at the moment. I love young adult mystic books so this one was perfect. So I bought it and read it…
Main characters:
Grace Divine is a pastor’s daughter and a 15 years old girl. She is our heroine in the book and is all her name promises. The story is written in her POV. She is very close to her brother Jude and in their childhood the two of them spend their time together with their neighbors’ son Daniel.
Jude Divine, Grace’s brother and the perfect guy: good looking, smart and always up to help anyone that needs help. He was best friends with Daniel before something happened that changed everything and Daniel disappears.
Daniel Kalibi: Mysterious guy who comes back 3 years after something incredible happens which nobody talks about.
The Divine family: They are the pastor’s family and if you ever saw 7th Heaven you know exactly how to picture this family!
Grace and Daniel fall in love and Grace’s family is totally against this relationship, specially after this “3-years-ago-thing-which-nobody-ever-talks-about”. Clearly, there is something off with Daniel, he doesn’t seem like a “normal guy” and Grace is dying to know what it is. She wants to save Daniel from whatever it is and wants to do her name justice in helping Daniel.
One cannot not help but like Daniel although he seems dark and mysterious and we don’t know if he’s in the end a “good” or a “bad” guy.
What do I think about this book?
The book is well written and after a slow beginning, later on the the pace increases and more and more secrets are revealed. Since we deal with a pastor’s family there are lots of biblical references and I found this a bit to much, to be honest. Grace is a teenager who is in between being always the Pastor’s girl and the wish to be just normal like anybody else. Those discrepancies force her actions and sometimes I just cannot follow her decisions. Jude – her brother – falls into the same category, while he seems THE perfect guy – brother – son – friend he is also caught in the boundaries of their Christian life. I think I have the biggest problem with Jude, he is not convincing to me and especially the ending made me wrinkle my nose.
The character I loved most was Daniel – he caught me, although I’d have loved to see a bit deeper into his soul. But his decisions and actions were honest and driven by the wish to protect the ones he love and by his desperate wish to be someone else and save his soul.
Will Grace save Daniel and his soul?
What if she has to do the ultimate sacrifice to save him ?
My Verdict:
I give this book 3 out of 5 books.
It is definitely nice to read and includes some romanctic love and dark secrets. But it’s not one of these mind-blowing – squeee-moment books which makes you want to directly read it again. Apart from that I hardly had water in my eyes (which definitely means something with me….)
BUT, this is just my opinion and I’m dying to know what the ones who
read it have to say about it!

Wow Danny, after watching that trailer, I feeling the same way you first felt. Like it is exactly the type of YA book I need to read right now. But after considering your review, I'm happy to put it on my Kindle list and get to it eventually! I am curious about this Daniel character, and I love dark theme, too! This was a WOWZA book for me. I LOVED it! I found the characters more believable then most YA books. Maybe because I come from a religious family I understood the family dynamics more. Anyway, that's my opinion!
